In January of 2002 the City of Denton City Council reaffirmed the following goals and priorities:

During the City Council Annual Planning Retreat in August of 2002, The City of Denton City Council developed a "Dream of Denton."
- Denton is a city where people are proud to live.
- Denton is considered the "place to be."
- Denton maintains and continues to grow an economic base that supports the dream.
- Denton improves its quality of life as it continues to grow.
- Denton retains its small town values while continuing cutting edge growth and viability.
- Denton is known for racial harmony: everyone belongs and people are respectful of
differences. - Denton is a city where government works well and the majority of people do not feel
isolated from the process. - Denton retains its distinctiveness.
- Denton is a regional player, nationally renowned, and cutting edge.
- Denton is known for outstanding infrastructure and an exemplary school system.
During the Annual Planning Retreat, Council reaffirmed their commitment to a Vision for Denton in the 21st Century:
- A Community of excellence for living, working, learning, and playing.
Excellence for living
To develop Denton as a safe, attractive community with strong neighborhoods, a unique identity, and a sense of historical pride.
Excellence for working
To develop Denton as a leading entrepreneurial city that attracts high-tech, high-skill, high paying jobs.
Excellence for learning
To develop Denton as a community that promotes excellence in lifelong learning by providing education and training opportunities for all citizens.
Excellence for playing
To develop Denton as a center of diverse and accessible historical, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
